「READING」

Captain Xin Yitao, could you please give us a brief introduction to the vessel Wan Hai 521 from a captain's perspective?

I am currently serving as Master of Wan Hai 521, a vessel built in 2009. At 16 years old, she remains in prime condition — all machinery and deck equipment are well-maintained through the combined efforts of the crew and shore teams, giving her the performance of a vessel half her age.

My officers are Chinese nationals and my operational crew are Myanmar nationals. We operate as a cohesive, professional unit where everyone fulfills their duties with dedication and supports one another under clear leadership. I am proud to command this outstanding and reliable team.

In day-to-day operations, what shipshore coordination mechanisms and onboard procedures do you typically rely on to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel? And in your view, which aspects of shorebased support have been most helpful to onboard operations?

Ship-shore coordination mechanisms:

A) Daily communication and data exchange — Real-time connectivity via AIS, remote monitoring systems, and satellite communications. The ship submits daily reports and voyage data to shore without delay.

B) Safety and emergency response — Strict adherence to ISM Code requirements and CSM’s ship-shore safety management system.

C) Technical and spares support — Shore-based technical and marine departments provide continuous technical backing.

D) Regulatory and port-state updates — Shore teams relay the latest flag-state and port-state requirements, guide pre-arrival preparations, and coordinate port calls for safe, efficient operations.

Core onboard workflows:

A) Safe and effective navigational watchkeeping

B) Safe stowage and cargo management

C) Regular maintenance, inspection, and upkeep of shipboard equipment

D) Ongoing training and drills to sharpen competence and meet required standards

E) Strengthening safety management in accordance with applicable rules and regulations

What helps most: Shore support in technical matters, spares and stores supply, emergency response, and resource allocation make the biggest difference to those of us on the front line.

As Captain, how do you foster team cohesion and maintain a positive working atmosphere among the crew in your daily management?

Safety comes first, backed by rules and regulations. I run a fair and transparent ship, with genuine care for crew welfare and health. Regular refresher training on operations and regulatory requirements keeps the team sharp and ready. Sensible work planning, coupled with active guidance and encouragement, fosters a safe and positive environment on board. The aim is a cohesive, highly skilled, collaborative, and efficient team.

During your time with Columbia Shipmanagement, which training programmes have left a lasting impression on you?

At Columbia — a globally respected ship manager — the standout programmes have been: PSC inspection and deficiency management; ISM / MLC system and safety management, including ECM; and shipboard emergency response and reaction training. Company training has proved invaluable in real-world vessel operations.

How would you describe your overall experience working within Columbia Shipmanagement's management system? As a senior captain, would you recommend Columbia to young seafarers looking to build their careers?

My experience at CSM has been excellent — a genuinely rewarding chapter in my career. What strikes me most is the disciplined, rigorous management system. From SMS execution and shore technical support to crew training, everything forms a mature, closed loop. Crew welfare is safeguarded, and salaries are paid promptly. That gives every Master and crew member on board solid confidence and peace of mind.

As a Captain, I would strongly recommend CSM to young seafarers. The training infrastructure is comprehensive, the platform is professional, career pathways are clear, rights are protected, and the industry outlook is strong.
